Third seed Ajla Tomljanovic (CRO) lost two close sets to Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic, 75 76(5), while tenth seed Jana Cepelova (SVK) went down 75 63 to Anna Orlik from Belarus. Krunic now faces American Mallory Burdette for a place in the semifinals, while Orlik will do battle against Russian Ksenia Kirillova.
3/30/2009Pereira Defends Title at South America’s Grade A Copa Gerdau: Played out on the clay courts of the Asociacao Leopoldina Juvenil, the Copa Gerdau is the culmination of the COSAT 18 & under circuit in South America, which has seen each of the ten member nations host a tournament. South America’s showcase event saw Njiric, seeded fifth, defeat the favourite, Kristina Mladenovic (FRA), at the quarterfinal stage. Njiric overcame seventh seed Jana Cepelova (SVK) 63 76(7) in the final of the girls singles event to claim the first Grade A title of her junior career. Njiric lost just one set throughout the event. Njiric then sealed a memorable tournament as she claimed the girls’ doubles title with partner Kristina Mladenovic (FRA). The twin victories elevate the Croatian’s junior ranking into the world’s top ten for the first time in her career.
3/25/2009Second round line up complete in Brasil: Fifth seed Silvia Njiric (CRO) eased past Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) 61 75 and Seventh seed Jana Cepelova was a convincing 63 60 winner over Marcela Henriques Brandao (BRA). The only upset in the girls’ event on day two was the defeat of promising fourteen-year-old Madison Keys (USA), seeded nine, by world No. 219 Gabriel Coglitore (VEN), 64 63.
